I received a call from a lady on Wednesday, from her accent, she is 100% a china lady. She told me they were having a charity bazaar at Victoria Street and asked me if I was at the bazaar. I told her I wasn't. Her reply was 'oh! no wonder we kept on announcing for you to come to the stage to claim your prize but you didn't came forward! You won one of our top prizes but I can't reveal to you what it is.' I was like: HUH???????? Since when did I enter my name in such lucky draw or whatever they call it? And how the hell they manage to get my contact number? She asked me to go down to collect it before 4pm and added on that if I can't make my way down that day, she would have to ask their lawyer to do some documentation or some legal stuff. Feeling pissed and remembering the similar case that happened to my sis a few weeks ago , I said bye and hung up the phone.
THE NEXT DAY, the 'scam company' called me again. I was at Sentosa with my girl friends and it was a different china lady who spoke to me. She asked why I didn't went to collect my prize and also asked a whole lot of questions about me. I was like: ??????? again. This time round she told me what they are doing is government related, then I said 'fine, then you all should notify me with a letter printed in black and white instead of calling me so many times (2 times only la, but these kind of calls are really irritating). What do you really want me to do now?' She changed her words again, saying that they are a private organization and they don't send letters, only phone calls. Finally, I asked her again 'So, what is it that you want me to do now?' Then she said sorry for taking up my time and hung up.
THE BEST THING is, my sis receive such call also that day. Scams la. They are trying their luck to see which 'client' is gullible enough to really go down to their 'office' to claim the prizes. They made everything sound so attractive to make people fall for their trap. But they didn't realize that such phone calls are so common now that everyone is aware of it. I hope that I wasn't stereotyping just cos the speaker over the phone was a china lady. Imagine the whole conversation in China accent mandarin, even so, I needed time to process what they are talking about cos they talk without full stop and commas.
If any of you receive such calls in future , its better to hang up straight away. I should have done that in the first place. But if I had done that, I won't have so much to write in this post =) I think I can consider it a blessing in disguise? At least I didn't lose anything, maybe just pieces of personal information here and there.
